Solving High-Temperature Filter Cartridge Failure in a Petrochemical Refinery

Customer Background

The customer operates a large petrochemical refinery where process water filtration supports continuous production across demanding operating conditions.

Unlike general industrial water treatment, refinery filtration systems may operate at elevated temperatures and high flow rates for extended periods. Filter cartridges used in these systems must therefore provide not only the required filtration efficiency, but also sufficient thermal and mechanical stability throughout their service life.

The customer had been experiencing repeated failures with the cartridges installed in one of its high-temperature process water filtration systems.

The existing cartridges performed adequately under normal conditions, but could not maintain their structural integrity when continuously exposed to the actual operating temperature and flow conditions of the refinery.

What initially appeared to be a filter-life problem was, in fact, a cartridge construction problem.

The Problem: Cartridge Deformation Under High-Temperature Operation

During operation, the existing filter cartridges gradually lost their dimensional stability. The filter material and supporting structure began to deform under the combined effects of elevated temperature, continuous flow and differential pressure.

Once deformation occurred, the cartridge could no longer maintain its intended filtration structure.

This created several operational problems:

  • shortened cartridge service life
  • more frequent filter change-outs
  • increased maintenance workload
  • risk of unstable filtration performance
  • potential contaminant breakthrough into the downstream process

Simply replacing the cartridges more frequently would have treated the symptom rather than the cause.

The customer needed a cartridge specifically designed for continuous operation under high-temperature, high-flow conditions.

Engineering Review of the Actual Operating Conditions

Pullner's technical team reviewed the filtration system and operating requirements before recommending a replacement.

Instead of selecting a cartridge based only on dimensions and micron rating, we evaluated the parameters that were directly contributing to the previous failures, including operating temperature, required flow rate, differential pressure, process fluid and existing housing configuration.

The analysis showed that the previous cartridge construction was not sufficiently resistant to the thermal and mechanical stresses of the application.

Based on these conditions, Pullner proposed the PHFLH Series high-temperature, high-flow filter cartridge.

The PHFLH cartridge uses a 6-inch large-diameter high-flow design with temperature-resistant PET filter media and a stainless steel reinforced outer structure. It is designed for continuous high-temperature liquid filtration and can operate at temperatures up to 120°C.

The larger cartridge format also provides the filtration capacity required for high-flow industrial systems while reducing the number of cartridges needed compared with conventional small-diameter elements.

Verification Before Full-Scale Replacement

For a refinery operating continuously, replacing a filtration product without verification introduces unnecessary process risk.

Before moving to full production, Pullner evaluated the proposed cartridge configuration against the customer's operating requirements and carried out internal testing to confirm its suitability.

Particular attention was given to structural stability, filtration performance and pressure resistance under the specified operating conditions.

Only after the cartridge configuration had been verified was the replacement solution supplied for installation.

This allowed the customer to address the existing failure problem without making changes to the overall filtration process or accepting an untested cartridge solution.

Stable Filtration Under High-Temperature Conditions

After installation, the PHFLH cartridges maintained their structure under the high-temperature operating conditions that had caused the previous filters to deform.

The recurring cartridge failure was eliminated, and the process water filtration system returned to stable operation.

With improved cartridge durability, the customer was also able to extend replacement intervals and reduce the maintenance work associated with premature filter change-outs.

Most importantly, the solution addressed the root cause of the problem.

Rather than compensating for unsuitable cartridges through more frequent replacement, the customer now had a filter element designed around the actual temperature, flow and mechanical requirements of the refinery process.

Selecting the Right Cartridge for the Process, Not Just the Housing

This project demonstrates a common problem in industrial filtration: a cartridge can have the correct dimensions and micron rating and still be unsuitable for the application.

Temperature, flow rate, differential pressure, fluid compatibility and cartridge construction all influence how a filter performs over its actual service life.

In this refinery application, changing to a cartridge engineered for the real operating environment eliminated repeated failures and restored stable filtration without requiring a fundamental redesign of the process.

For high-temperature petrochemical and refinery filtration applications, Pullner provides cartridge selection, custom design and testing support based on actual process conditions rather than specification matching alone.
